I agree with Tim. I don't see anything wrong with people meeting online initially, but it's not really going to go anywhere meaningful if you are not able to meet in person, face-to-face. Talking and texting can only take you but so far, and you don't really know what kind of connection you have with someone until you are in their presence.

let me add this, I think online dating is a good way to break the ice with girls or guys, what I mean is sometimes its easier to talk to people online then it is face to face..back when i was in high school i was kind of a quite laid back shy guy, now while i didnt really date online, i did talk to girls online as if i was dating them before i actually dated girls in person if that makes any sense haha, i think it helped me become more comfortable, because now im 30 and am NOTHING like i was when i was a teen, ill say whatever, whenever to whoever haha..but actual online dating is pointless for the most part
